What should you look for in a replacement headphone battery?
There are many battery brands and types on the market. But, how do you find the correct replacement battery for your headphones or headsets?
Compatibility. You want to find a battery that 100% fits your device. Preferably one that was designed specifically as a replacement battery for your headphone or headset type. To find out if a battery is a match for your device, look at the model/serial number on your battery and find a replacement that’s compatible with it.
All of the headphone batteries for sale on our website come with a compatibilities list to ensure you always find the correct battery for your device.
Correct voltage. Ensure whatever replacement battery you purchase has the same voltage as your original battery. Small differences are acceptable - deviations of 0.1V-0.2V, for example - but anything above or below that could potentially damage your headphones.
Correct cell type. Headphone batteries often use either lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) or nickel metal hydride batteries (NiMH). If your original battery used Li-ion cell technology, it’s advisable that you choose a replacement which uses the same cell type and vice-versa.
Capacity. The capacity of a battery, indicated in mAh (milliampere hours) or Ah (ampere hours), represents how much charge that battery can store and provide. Essentially, its battery life. The higher the mAh/Ah, the higher the capacity and theoretically the longer you can use the headphones between charges.
Modern replacement battery packs are available that have a higher mAh/Ah than even your original, branded battery - meaning even longer battery life.
CELLONIC® produces a wide range of long-life, high-capacity replacement headphone batteries which can even out-perform the lifespan of the batteries which originally came with your headphones or headset.
How do you replace a Bluetooth headphone battery?
Replacing the battery of a wireless Bluetooth headset or headphones can be quite easy and definitely something you can do at home if you have the right tools.
What tools do you need to replace a headphone battery?
Mini screwdrivers. Headphones are held together using tiny screws so having a handful of mini screwdrivers to hand will make this job easy.
Spudgers and pry tools. You might need a thin prying tool to open the headphone or headset up, and to help you to lift out and remove the old battery.
A soldering iron. Whilst many replacement batteries come with a simple plug to connect it onto the circuit board, others may not. In these cases, you’ll have to solder the red (positive) and black (negative) wires onto the circuit board yourself.
Double-sided tape. To help the new battery sit comfortably within the headphones, you might wish to use double-sided tape to hold it in place.
Guide to replacing wireless headphone batteries
Locate the battery. The battery is contained in one of the headphone earpieces. Often the right-hand one, it’s the one with the input for your charger cable.
Remove the ear pad. These often simply pull or twist off, but in the cases of some manufactures you may have to use a prying tool to loosen and lift out the ear pad.
Unscrew the panel. Under the earpad, there’s a plastic panel that covers the circuit board beneath. Using a small screwdriver, unscrew the screws holding the cover in place and put them somewhere safe. Lift the panel off to expose the circuit board.
Remove the old battery. Remembering exactly where the battery wires met the circuit board (taking a photo would be ideal), use your fingers or a prying tool to gently disconnect the battery and lift it out of the headphone.
Replace the battery. As mentioned above, some batteries simply plug into the circuit board but others will need to be soldered in. When soldering, ensure you solder the two wires exactly where they were before. If you took a photo, use it for guidance.
Charge your headphones. If you’ve installed the battery correctly, it should start charging straight away.
