How do I choose an AC adapter?

There are a wide variety of mains adapters and power cords on the market, for many different purposes and device types and with an endless number of different plug and input types.

If you want a solid, reliable battery charger that will keep your devices fully charged and will protect and prolong the life of the batteries in your devices, quality is the name of the game. Modern, high-quality chargers offer smart and gentle charging, avoiding over-charging or under-charging to increase the lifespan of your rechargeable batteries. Modern safety features are also important, including short-circuit, overheating and overvoltage protection, Fast Charging and automatic shut-off functions.

When shopping online for a replacement AC adapter, it’s also important to ensure the plug on the adapter has the correct head for the sockets of the country you’re living in. E.g. the 3-pronged Type G plugs used in the United Kingdom.

The general rule for choosing a mains adapter is to find one that matches the voltage of your device. You also need one which offers either the same or a greater mA (milliamp) than the device you will be charging. This information should be available in product descriptions of power adapters for sale online, and physically written on the adapter itself if you have it to-hand.

How do I know which charger to buy?

If you’re looking for a new mains charger for your electrical device - e.g. a new phone charger plug, laptop adapter, replacement camera battery charger or satnav charger - how do you know which one is right for your device?

Not all charging cables have standard input plugs like the USB C or Micro USB, and many brands have their own specialised plug types. When choosing a universal replacement AC adapter and charging cord, the most important thing is to find one that is 100% compatible with your device.

Firstly, a charger needs to run at the same voltage (v) as your device. If the voltage does not match, it could cause damage to the battery. The mA figure should be the same or higher - modern chargers with a higher mA can offer faster charging than your original one.

Information on the type of charger your specific device requires should be available in your device’s manual, written on the device itself or by searching the internet.

When shopping for charging leads on subtel.co.uk, we strive to list all of the devices which are compatible with each adapter. That way, you have a clear indicator of whether or not the power supply you’re browsing is compatible for your device or not.

What are the different types of chargers?

With so many devices that need charging on a daily basis as part of the modern world, there is also a wide selection of chargers available - each with their own unique purposes and benefits.

Below is a list of the main chargers we offer:

What are Universal Chargers?

Sometimes called generic chargers, universal chargers are chargers that have been designed to be compatible with devices from other brands - e.g. they might function with Sony devices even though they were not manufactured by Sony.

Universal chargers also often work for a wide range of devices from other brands that all use the same charging ports. E.g. a universal USB charger with a Micro USB connection will successfully recharge all devices with a Micro USB connection.

Universal chargers can often be an affordable alternative to buying branded chargers.

What are Smart Chargers?

Smart Chargers, often called Intelligent Chargers, demonstrate an advancement in charging technology.

Controlled by a microprocessor, Smart Chargers automatically adjust their charging speeds and current to match the individual needs of the battery (or batteries) being charged.

With automatic shut-off, under-charging and over-charging protections, overload protection, reverse polarity protection, overheating protection and faulty cell protection, Smart Chargers ‘gently’ recharge batteries - which can improve the performance and prolong the lifespan of a battery.

What are Power Banks?

Power banks are external rechargeable battery packs that act as portable energy sources. Often hand-held and pocket-sized, Power Banks store a fixed amount of energy, measured in mAh. The greater the number of mAh, the more energy it can hold.

Powerbanks can recharge any device that has a compatible charging port. Power is usually transferred via USB ports - and, because of this, Power Banks are often used to recharge smaller electrical devices such as smartphones, portable speakers, MP3 players etc.

What are Wireless Chargers?

Wireless chargers (or induction chargers) allow you to charge an electronic device without the need for a cable.

Often coming in the form of a stand or a pad, all you have to do is to place your wireless charging-compatible device onto the wireless charger and it will automatically begin to charge using induction charging.

A benefit of Wireless Charging is its convenience - you simply lay your device onto the wireless charging dock and it charges. Not having to use wires reduces wear-and-tear on the charging port on your electronic device as well as the need to replace lost or faulty cables.

What is a Car Adapter for Cigarette Lighter Charger?

Car socket to USB chargers plug into the cigarette lighter in cars and vans, enabling electrical devices to draw power from the vehicle’s internal battery.

They are the perfect travel chargers during car journeys and are often used to charge phones whilst providing music to the car stereo and as GPS / Sat Nav chargers.

What is a Fast Charger?

You might have heard about Fast Charging cables - ones that can charge your smartphone 2-4 times faster than before. Well, what are they and how do they work?

If you’re interested in purchasing a fast charger for your smartphone, laptop, tablet or other device, it’s best to first check that your device is Fast Charger capable. Most modern devices are, and if your device charges with a USB-C cable or Apple Lightning cable, yours probably is.

Cables for Fast Charging work because the wires inside them are larger, thus can carry larger currents. Standard cables are 28 gauge and are capable of a charge rate of around 0.5A, whereas cables with a larger gauge (thicker wires inside) can carry larger currents of 2A+. Thus, your device is charged quicker.

Because of the extra materials needed to make Fast Charge cables, they’re also often more expensive than their slower counterparts - but the increased performance negates the extra cost.

subtel® sells a wide variety of Fast Charger cables for mobile phones, laptops, tablets and a wide variety of other devices - high quality for reliable, long-term performance.
